The big question I always get asked is about gearing. Alpine climbs tend to be long but not especially steep. Personally I ride a double chain ring with 39 x 27 as my lowest gear. I weigh 78 kg. Some people ride triple chain sets with 30 x 23 – weight up to 90 kg. I have a friend who swears by his 39 x 21 – but then he is 66 kg and very fit!
Triple chain sets have the advantage of smaller gaps between ratios. This will definitely help you to retain a rhythm whilst climbing.

If you plan to ride a mountain bike (on the road) I would recommend that you invest in high-pressure road tyres. They will make climbing easier and descending safer.
Please ensure your bike has been serviced and is fitted with tyres and brakes that are in excellent condition. Additional items like bags and pumps must be well secured to your bike.

Helmets and eye protection are essential. Wear them or not when climbing but when descending it is obligatory. On less bright days you may find heavily tinted glasses too dark as you descend through tree lined roads.

Climbing is hot sticky work but the tops of mountains and descents are cold. In addition to what feels comfortable at the chalet you must carry a wind proof jacket. Long fingered gloves early/late season may be needed.
Generally the roads in the Alps are of very good quality and surprisingly clean. When descending you do need to keep an eye out for water running across the road and stones. In some places it is possible to achieve speeds of 70-80 km an hours (40-50mph) higher speeds are achievable at higher altitudes. I recommend you build to this and always slow down through villages.

.What to bring with you

  • some cash (euros) for food and drinks at lunchtime. In the mountain restaurants the food is wholesome and relatively inexpensive with the added bonus that cyclists are welcomed.
  • Mobile phone with the groups numbers pre –programmed
  • Pump
  • Inner tubes
  • Water/energy drinks
  • Additional clothing (wind proof jacket etc)
  • Multi-purpose tool
  • Camera- to capture that summit shot!

After a ride drink lots of water.
